Ready to Serve Cameron Parish

South Cameron Memorial Hospital opened its doors in 1963 as a 25-bed acute care hospital. The idea for the hospital came after the deadly Hurricane Audrey in 1957 that killed 390 people in Cameron Parish. The American Legion made a substantial donation to assist the parish in obtaining a hospital. Property owners in the region voted for a $350,000 bond issue and federal Hill-Burton funds were obtained to finance the new building.

South Cameron Memorial Hospital maintains sole community provider status and is currently offers emergency services, inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory services and skilled nursing services for Cameron, Louisiana and the area's several thousand oil and gas exploration personnel, commercial and recreational fishermen.

South Cameron Memorial Hospital was completely destroyed by Hurricane Rita in September 2005. The hospital rebuilt and began operations in November 2007.  On September 5, 2008, Cameron was hit again. Hurricane Ike, the third most costly storm in history with storm surge waters 11.5 feet tall, wiped out the the town of Cameron.
